Subversion Of The Current Compound Microscope The Star Line The Stellar1 Pro T

The Swift Stellar 1 microscope comes in two different versions: the cheaper of the two has the “traditional” DIN (160mm) achromatic objectives, and the more expensive version comes with Semi-Plan infinity objectives. Both microscopes have four objecties (4x, 10x, 40x, 100x oil) and two sets of eyepieces (10x and 25x). The choice between the two depends on mostly if you need the higher image quality for photography. Also be aware, that infinity objectives are much more rare, and I advise you to check if you are able to obtain additional objectives (such as a 20x or 60x) should you need them. If you intend to use the microscope mostly for educational use (colleges, schools etc), then I highly recommend that you get the DIN version of the microscope. Replacement objectives (should students damage them) are much cheaper and more easily available.

Lighting System

The Stellar 1 is powered with a 5V USB. This is rather unusual for a microscope of this size and price category, but makes the microscope independent of a power supply, as it allows you to connect a power pack battery. The microscope has a 30 minute auto-power off feature. Be aware of that in case you want to do time-lapse microscopy (you have to change the intensity briefly to reset the timer). The LED is easily accessible and exchanging it should be easy. The power adapter and adapter cable can be stored on the back of the microscope and it is possible to also place a battery pack there.

Focus

The coarse and fine focus knob are de-coupled, which allows for a higher precision. For microscopes of this category, this is standard, however. On the left side of the microscope, you can find a tension adjustment ring. Turning this ring allows you to adjust the resistance of the coarse focus knob.

Condenser

The condenser is fixed at the top-most position and can not be lowered (which is also not necessary). The condenser diaphragm is color-coded, so that it is easily visible, which setting to use for the different objectives. This can be an advantage when the microscope is used for educational purposes.

Phototube

The phototube can be easily disconnected to reduce space. The length of the phototube can be adjusted to make sure that both images through the phototube and through the eyepiece are in focus. There is no lever to redirect the light between eyepieces and phototube, the light is always split.

Accessories

Additional items that are included are: a pair of 25x eyepieces, blue filter, hexagonal wrench (tool), dust cover, eyepiece rubber caps, instruction manual.

Mechanics

The trinocular head can be turned smoothly and without scratching. This makes it easier for multiple people to use the microscope (eg. classroom setting).
